Average outcomes are calculated using the values entered for each outcome and the total of these across a focus area. The total across the focus area is divided by the total outcome count value and this is then rounded up/down (depending on the settings) to the nearest outcome. As an example, the screenshot below shows the values entered within our 1-4 Book Look outcome set. These are as follows: Red (33), Amber (66), and Green (99).
This article and video tutorial linked below uses the default 'Round Down' setting for the examples but Sisra Administrators can change this to 'Standard Rounding', if preferred, which will mean this will be rounded to the nearest outcome instead. Further information on changing this can be found in our article: FAQ - Can I change the way Average Outcome is calculated in the Reports? (Admin). |
In the reports, we can see for the Attitudes to Learning focus area, there is 1 Red outcome, 5 Amber and 2 Green.
To calculate the average outcome for this focus area, we would multiply the total outcomes by the values entered in the Admin area for the outcome set.
Outcome | Value | Total Outcomes | Total Outcomes x Value |
Red | 33 | 1 | 33 |
Amber | 66 | 5 | 330 |
Green | 99 | 2 | 198 |
Then, find the total of these figures (Total Outcomes x Value column) and divide this by the record count. In this case, this would be 561 / 8 = 70.125. This average would then be rounded down to the nearest value for that outcome set, which would be Amber (66).
Similarly for the Use of Technology focus area, this would be:
Outcome | Value | Total Outcomes | Total Outcomes x Value |
Red | 33 | 1 | 33 |
Amber | 66 | 3 | 198 |
Green | 99 | 4 | 396 |
This would then give the calculation 627 / 8 = 78.375. Again as this hasn't met the value 99 for the outcome Green, this would be rounded down to the Amber average outcome.
