Categories combined with user groups play an important role in defining who can create and/or access certain records.
You are able to create custom categories and you are also provided with five defaults including:

Categories can be assigned to templates, and you are able to assign multiple categories to a single template. A category must be selected when creating a record, and users need to have access to the relevant category via their user group in order to view that record.
